About Liz
I’m Liz Blackwell, a Denver-based artist working in sculptural ceramics and mixed media.
I came to clay more than a decade ago, initially looking for relief from the demands of everyday life. What began as a place to step away gradually became a way to pay closer attention—to overheard conversations, an animal’s expression, a weathered piece of wood, or an object marked by use and time.
My work has evolved from primarily figurative storytelling toward more abstract and conceptual forms. I combine clay with materials such as steel, wire, wood, and found objects, building surfaces through layers of glaze, underglaze, stains, washes, acrylic, and cold finishes. I am drawn to contrasts: humor and discomfort, strength and vulnerability, control and collapse. Cracks, scars, corrosion, and irregularities are not necessarily flaws; they can become evidence of pressure, survival, and lived experience.
I begin with an idea, but not a fixed outcome. The physical demands of the materials—the weight of clay, the pull of gravity, and the tension between separate elements—help determine what the sculpture becomes.
Whether recognizable or abstract, my sculptures explore the beauty found in the battered, strange, and overlooked. I want them to feel as though they have already lived a life—and to leave enough unresolved that viewers can bring their own experiences to what they see.
I studied ceramics at the Art Students League of Denver and completed a six-month studio mentorship with artist Janey Skeer. My work has been exhibited in Colorado and nationally and is held in private collections across the United States.
Each piece is one-of-a-kind, hand sculpted and built for a lifetime of entertainment.
